Custom or poverty

Are some customs, that being followed,

are just traditions, from centuries old,

to be believed, trusted faithfully,

without concerns and misgivings.

For, our ancestors were inspired,

were ignorant, at their wits' end,

forcing people, making decisions,

using myths, to influence opinions.

Was this fallacy, mere superstition,

Or there's something else, deeper reason?

Poverty...

It's the most pertaining cause,

faced with limited resources,

they develop habits and biases,

that go against, general conventions.

And we would judge, through our prism,

unaware of their needs & compulsions,

for, they have to make compromises,

living within, a tight-knit community.

But now, time has changed...

These customs, facing a slow death,

as people find better opportunities,

provide their children, good lifestyles.

Once a symbol of their uniqueness,

losing its footings, against newer generations,

for, things which were morally conflicting,

have lost the tag, of being a heritage.
